Hello Guys for the most recent updates, check the blog! Thats where the actions at.

Etchells World Champs

John Bertrand and his crew on Triad from Australia won the 2010 World Championship championship on Saturday 28th August with 1 race to spare, they were pushed hard by Ante Razmilovic who refused to give up competing till the last possible moment on Swedish blue and Ante finished second overall, Eamonn O’Nolan and John Gimson on Holly Scott from the Solent finished 4th winning race 7.The week was primarily sailed in moderate and occasionally fresh breezes in a tidal conditions that were complicated by Lambey Island on the north of the race course, during the week we did have one race day cancelled due to strong winds, and one race abandoned half way through due to boats at the leeward mark being swept past the gate on the tide with no breeze after the leaders Ante and Nils Razmilovic on separate boats had successfully rounded the marks and were on route to the windward mark for the second time, needless to say in the bar afterwards everyone else claimed to be in about 5th place or better when the race was abandoned ?.Both Nils and Ante now living overseas with their families both still count as honoury members of the Solent fleet, and each won a race, Nils had reformed his old crew of Brian and Turkey for the week, and they competed to a high standard in the bars as well as afloat.Julia Bailey on Stampede led race 6 for almost its entire length, and we cheered Julia from our boat when she rounded the leeward mark for the last time, that was just before we saw Bertrand rounding in second place 50 metres behind her, in a shifty breeze that was going to be tough, and unfortunately for Julia, Bertrand won the race adding to his previous 3 wins, and totalled he finished totalling 5 wins from his 8 starts. Some of the crews arrived fresh (wrong expression, “tired” is more appropriate) from the commodores cup, On "Elvis" David Franks had his secret weapon, some 40 kilo’s of 15 year old Fabio from Malta sailing with David as the 4th man (boy) and Fabio never stopped smiling all week. The race management was excellent in what at times was difficult conditions, and ashore Howth Yacht club members and staff both in the bar and the boat park looked after all of us efficiently and with great hospitality, free hot food and beer after racing was the highlight of many a tired, wet crews day.

for us the regatta ended with a 10th position overall which was a dissapointment, we were looking for a top 5 finish and in the end a lack of prepperation let us down, with breakages and the wrong tools on the boat to get it fixed, our posiotons in the first few races. however by the end of the week we pulled it together and managed to post so good top 10 results, dueling with Bertrand during several races. all in all a good experiance, but a dissapointing result. next time get there early and get prepaired, no substitue for good preparation.

Fastnet 2009

WOW WOW WOW, I got back from the OSTAR and was delighted to get a call from
Offshore Challenges (Team Ellen!!!) who have for 2009 been managing the Artemis
Ocean Racing Team. Artemis have 2 Open 60's and they have put Sam Davies in as
skipper of one for the forthcomng Transat Jaques Varbe (which starts in Novemeber)
and Artemis are also supporting a group of young British solo and shorthanded sailors
in the Mini Trnsat, and Figaro classses. The long and the short of it was that I was
offered a place on the other Open 60 for the Fastnet, so I dropped my plans to sail the
J105 in the race and went for my first Open 60 sailing which was AWESOME....man
I love those boats. FAST FAST FAST...easy to sail fast as well.

More to follow soon....

Mead 2nd in Class and 5th Overall in OSTAR 2009

After a brutal 3,000 mile race from Plymouth UK to Newport RI America,
Team Oscar Mead was beaten to first in class by Irishman Barry Hurly in the closing
hours of the race, having fought a close battle all the way, Oscar lost out by a narrow
margin of 22 minutes as the wind died and shifty conditions played into Barrys hands.
See the daily blog on the tab on the left hand side of this page from the OSTAR.

Mead Wins RSYC 2 handed series

Having decided at an early age that
he wanted to be a shorthanded offshore
racer, 18 year old Cowes based sailor
Oscar Mead achieved another step
down that road recently when he was
confirmed as the winner of the
Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s,
season long, 2-Handed Series earlier
this month.
With the last race being called off due
to a complete lack of wind in the Solent,
Team Oscar Mead counted 5 firsts
and a 10th to totally dominate the fleet
of over 40 yachts in Class 1. The 8 race
series was made up of 4 inshore races
 (including the RSYC’s legendary
2 handed Round the Island Race
with over 150 competing boats)
and 4 offshore races. Team Oscar Mead
won 3 of the 4 offshore races,
 (overnight to Weymouth,
overnight round the channel and
 overnight to Honfleur.) Inshore,
Team Oscar Mead won the
NabTower race and a windy “Spring Double” in the Solent which was the first race of
the season back in April.

Commenting on his success Oscar said
“Its been a fantastic season for me and when I look back and remember taking delivery of Juneau 3 days before the first race weekend, it seemed inconceivable that we would have done this well, but things have really clicked for me this year. I have really enjoyed every race we did, especially the overnights”

Commenting on the racing Oscar said
“ RSYC have run a great series of races and I really thank them for putting on the best attended 2 handed racing in the UK. I had done the 2 handed Round the Island a few times before, but never entered the series as a whole, but the club have laid on great racing, adapting to the French fisherman’s blockade of Cherbourg (the weekend we were supposed to race there) with a race round the channel, despite a forecast of 35 knots of wind, and also for putting on overnight races which have been such fun. I would like to thank Kathy Smalley and her team at RSYC as well as McGuigan Wines who sponsored the series, even if I did give my winnings to my Dad as he likes wine more than I do!!!”
